Ice Cube on ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Oscar Snub: ‘It’s the Oscars, They Do What They Do’

Ice Cube kept it real during his visit to The Wendy Williams Show. After the 2016 Academy Award nominations were announced on Thursday (Jan. 14), critics slammed the list for its lack of diversity. One notable snub included the record-breaking N.W.A flick Straight Outta Compton, which only landed one nomination for best original screenplay.

When Williams said she expected the film to receive more nods, Cube — who co-produced the biopic alongside fellow N.W.A member Dr. Dre and the widow of the late Eazy-E — simply smiled and said, “Me too.”

“I’m not pissed, I’m not surprised. It’s the Oscars, they do what they do,” he continued. “The people love the movie, the people supported the movie.”

Straight Outta Compton racked up impressive accolades since its release last August: landing at No. 1 at the box office and raking in $200 million worldwide. “I can’t be mad,” the West Coast rapper added.

Cube also discussed N.W.A’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “It is nice to be recognized, but N.W.A is anti-establishment so we’re used to people trying to dismiss what we gotta say, used to the industry looking down on us,” he said. “We were the black sheeps of the industry and we used to it. If we didn’t get nominated, that would be familiar territory.”
