🎄As the final month of 1994 wrapped up, MTV Europe gave us a chart that was as diverse and memorable as the year itself. December’s Top 20 felt like a mixtape of emotions: from Christmas cheer to grunge nostalgia, from Eurodance highs to soft rock ballads — all coming together like a perfectly soundtracked winter snow globe. ❄️🎶 Let’s count it down from the bottom up…
At #20, Whigfield returned with “Another Day”, proving she was no one-hit wonder after the Euro-smash “Saturday Night”, which still held on at #18 after four months on the chart. Also in the festive spirit, Mariah Carey made her debut with what would become a modern Christmas classic — “All I Want For Christmas Is You” — arriving at #17 with jingle bells and vocal fireworks 🔔❤️.
Techno and rave culture found its place too: Erasure’s sleek synthpop track “I Love Saturday” slid in at #16, while German trance pioneers Members of Mayday broke in at #15 with “We Are Different” — a statement track for the dancefloor generation 💿. The Stone Roses dropped “Love Spreads” at #14, bringing gritty rock energy and a psychedelic edge, while East 17 softened their image with the emotional winter ballad “Stay Another Day”, fresh at #13 and destined to become a seasonal staple in the UK 🎄.
Another powerful debut came at #12: U96’s “Love Religion”, a hypnotic blend of techno and dreamy melodies. At #11, Nirvana made a haunting posthumous entry with their acoustic rendition of “About a Girl” from MTV Unplugged — Kurt Cobain’s raw vocals echoing deep into the hearts of a generation 💔.
As we enter the Top 10, Tom Jones’ funky comeback “If I Only Knew” climbed to #10, 2 Unlimited kept the Eurodance flames alive at #9 with “No One”, and Luther Vandross & Mariah Carey’s “Endless Love” held strong at #8 — a duet for the romantics. At #6, Ace of Base rose fast with “Living in Danger”, while Pato Banton’s feel-good reggae take on “Baby Come Back” reached a joyful #4 😎.
The biggest new entry this month came at #2: The Cranberries’ devastatingly powerful “Zombie”. With Dolores O’Riordan’s haunting vocals and the band’s grunge-influenced rock sound, it addressed violence and memory with bold, unflinching force — and instantly became an anthem 🧠🕊️.
But still holding the crown for a third consecutive month was Bon Jovi with their power ballad masterpiece “Always” at #1 💘. Emotional, epic, and unforgettable, it was the perfect song to close out the year and say goodbye to 1994 — a year of big voices, big feelings, and unforgettable melodies.
