David Bowie‘s Blackstar is the No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart. It’s Bowie’s first ever No. 1 album in the United States. Update 1/18 11:00 a.m.: Tony Visconti has written a statement about Blackstar reaching number one. Read it below.
According to Billboard, The Next Day peaked at No. 2 in 2013. Other noteworthy Top 10 chart entries include Station to Station (No. 3 in 1976), Let’s Dance (No. 4 in 1983),Diamond Dogs (No. 5 in 1974), David Live (No. 8 in 1974), and Young Americans (No. 9 in 1975).
Blackstar is also the No. 1 album on the UK charts, and 18 other Bowie albums re-emerged on the UK charts this week. In the past, several of Bowie’s albums have debuted at No. 1 in the UK.
Blackstar dethroned Adele’s 25 from the No. 1 spot, which has maintained the top spot for seven weeks. It sold the equivalent to 181,000 albums, of which 174,000 were pure album sales.
