The 23-year-old crooner released his first solo single, “Pillowtalk,” which is now a certified hit, last week, but he’s already one-upped himself by releasing an acoustic version of the slow jam. Dubbed “the living room session,” the new “Pillowtalk” has an even sexier sound to it than the original.
Gone are the heavy beats and emphasized are Zayn’s smooth vocals, which are highlighted by the playing of an acoustic guitar. But what has already made fans freak out is Zayn’s insanely impressive falsetto. Boy, can he hit a note. The goosebump-giving chorus will leave you with the chills—and the need to listen to this version on repeat.
Before he released this version on iTunes, which does away with the second verse entirely and is much shorter, Zayn teased the recording session on Snapchat in a series of black-and-white videos. It has been only a week and already Zayn has given fans two versions of the same song and a very sexy video that features girlfriend Gigi Hadid. We should’ve known what we were in for, as he teased to the British Sunday Times, “I think I’m pretty black and white what it’s about.”
He later added that he’s singing about something “so pure, so dirty and raw.”
“Everybody has sex, and it’s something people want to hear about,” Zayn added. “It’s part of everybody’s life, a very BIG part of life! And you don’t want to sweep it under the carpet. It has to be talked about.”
Zayn has been open about his departure from One Direction, saying the band’s music just wasn’t for him. So far, we’re pretty impressed with what he’s had to offer, even in the snippet of potential new single “Late Nights” that he shared on Twitter. As long as he’s happy, we’ll be happy for him.
“I feel good! I feel like that’s the key thing in life, you know regardless of whatever it is that you do,” he said of leaving the band in an interview with Elvis Duran. “You have to always remain true to yourself and do whatever makes you happy because at the end of the day, you answer to yourself so it’s a good place to be in. I’m happy about the decision I made.”
We’ll hear even more about his new music and his split from the band when he makes his first solo TV debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Feb. 17.
