About This Release
Released on February 21, 1997, Vanguard 97-08 reflects the broad musical landscape that American radio programmers were navigating during the first quarter of 1997. Produced by Radio Ventures for broadcast professionals, the series provided carefully selected promotional recordings intended to help stations evaluate new singles across multiple radio formats. Each disc combined established chart acts with emerging artists, allowing music directors to monitor developments across mainstream and specialty programming.
This edition illustrates the diversity of late-1990s radio particularly well. Alternative rock is represented by artists such as Stone Temple Pilots, Dishwalla, Blur, and Social Distortion, while contemporary R&B appears through Blackstreet, After 7, and Immature. The collection also includes adult contemporary performances from Bryan Adams, smooth jazz from Kenny G, Latin pop from Selena, ska-punk by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and dance releases including Le Click and 3rd Party, demonstrating Radio Ventures’ commitment to serving stations with varied programming formats.
Historically, the release captures a transitional period in popular music. Alternative rock remained commercially strong following the mid-1990s boom, contemporary R&B continued its rapid growth on American radio, and Latin music maintained a visible presence through artists such as Selena, whose recordings continued to receive significant airplay after her death in 1995. As an archival document, Vanguard 97-08 offers a valuable snapshot of the musical diversity heard on U.S. radio in early 1997.
Collector’s Note
Blur – “Song 2” represents one of the defining recordings of the band’s career. Released as the second single from the album Blur in 1997, it became the group’s biggest international hit, reaching the Top 10 in several countries and significantly expanding Blur’s recognition in North America. Its distinctive two-minute running time and memorable “Woo-hoo!” refrain have made it one of the most enduring alternative rock singles of the decade.
