About This Release

Vanguard 04/40 captures the sound of American radio as the fourth quarter of 2004 began. This promotional compilation brings together an impressive mix of Top 40, Adult Contemporary, Alternative Rock, Active Rock, Country, Urban, Hip-Hop, and Adult Album Alternative (AAA) releases, reflecting the broad programming needs of U.S. radio stations.

The disc features established artists including Phil Collins, Tom Waits, Tim McGraw, and Sevendust, alongside emerging acts such as Crossfade, Sugarcult, AFI, and Kevin Lyttle. It also includes several urban and hip-hop releases featuring Daddy Yankee, Ludacris, and Bone Crusher, illustrating the growing influence of hip-hop and reggaeton on American radio during the mid-2000s.

Containing 19 promotional tracks, the compilation showcases the wide variety of music being serviced to radio programmers during the first week of October 2004, from mainstream pop and country to alternative rock and urban crossover.

Collector’s Note

One of the most significant tracks on this compilation is “Dear God” by Nicholas Jonas, released several weeks before his Christmas single “Joy to the World (A Christmas Prayer)” appeared on later Vanguard editions.

At just 12 years old, Nicholas Jonas was beginning his recording career through INO Records, long before achieving worldwide fame as Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers. His early recordings attracted the attention of Columbia Records, ultimately leading to the formation of one of the biggest pop groups of the late 2000s.

This makes Vanguard 04/40 one of the earliest promotional compilations to feature a future international pop superstar.
