About This Release

Released on May 21, 1999, Vanguard 99-21 documents a particularly diverse moment in American radio programming at the close of the twentieth century. Produced by Radio Ventures, the Vanguard series provided radio stations with newly released promotional recordings spanning numerous formats, allowing music programmers to evaluate current singles from both established artists and emerging performers on a single compilation.

The release reflects the wide stylistic range heard on U.S. radio during the spring of 1999. Rock and alternative music are represented by Def Leppard, Blink-182, Smash Mouth, The Chemical Brothers, Luscious Jackson, Old 97’s, and Dub Pistols, while R&B and hip-hop appear through Ginuwine, 702, Trick Daddy featuring Trina, and J.T. Money. Adult contemporary audiences were served by recordings from Peabo Bryson, Elton John, Patty Griffin, and Curtis Stigers, illustrating the broad format coverage that characterized the Vanguard series.

Historically, this issue captures a transitional period when pop-punk, alternative rock, electronic music, contemporary R&B, and mainstream pop were simultaneously competing for radio exposure. The collection offers an informative archival snapshot of the musical diversity that defined American radio during the late 1990s.

Collector’s Note

Dido – “Here With Me” makes one of its earliest promotional appearances on this release, several months before the singer achieved worldwide commercial success with No Angel. The song later gained additional recognition as the opening theme for the television series Roswell, introducing Dido to a broad international audience before the breakthrough of “Thank You” in 2000–2001.
