This week, the Japan Airplay Top 100 delivers a spectrum of sounds—from indie lullabies to global pop thunder—reminding us that great music doesn’t just rise; it lingers, evolves, and sometimes reappears just when you need it most.
In the lower reaches, gentle textures and quiet revolutions take shape. At #100, The Bawdies offer “Sunny Side Up”, a retro-tinged ray of garage rock warmth. SAY SUE ME keeps their shoegaze dream alive with “TIME IS NOT YOURS”, while Studio April’s “赤春花” holds onto its spot like a secret. Debuts from Skima Switch, Lizzo, Olivia Dean, and 米津玄師 round out this section with variety—each voice distinct, each mood deliberate. These songs may sit low, but they cast long emotional shadows.
Climbing up, we encounter the international vanguard. JVKE & Tori Kelly float into the chart with the luminous “THIS IS WHAT FLOATING FEELS LIKE”, while Jorja Smith adds smoky vulnerability with “The Way I Love You.” Olivia Dean, Mina Okabe, and LITTLE SIMZ bring a global intimacy to the mix, as does the euphoric “Blessings” from Calvin Harris & Clementine Douglas, still soaring high. Even as trends shift weekly, the presence of such soulful global acts reflects a Japan that listens with open ears and an open heart.
By mid-chart, things get eclectic—and exhilarating. Rihanna’s surprise entry “Friend of Mine” at #43 is a welcomed heartbeat of R&B confidence. YOASOBI’s dazzling new single “Watch me!” debuts at #9, offering vivid storytelling with synth-driven intensity. SUPER BEAVER, Yorushika, Aimer, imase, and Mega Shinnosuke keep J-pop and indie-pop firmly rooted in this section, while the return of Mrs. GREEN APPLE with “ライラック” (#30) and “クスシキ” (#24) proves the band’s emotional versatility is still in full bloom.
At #37, JIN’s “Don’t Say You Love Me” brings a tender elegance to K-pop solo expression, and not far behind, RIP SLYME crash in with the vibrant “Wacha Wacha”, infusing some well-timed hip-hop fun into the mix. Damiano David’s “Zombie Lady” is delightfully theatrical, even as his “Voices” continues to rise. Meanwhile, “まなざし” by SUPER BEAVER continues to quietly move listeners week after week—proof that vulnerability still earns airplay.
As we enter the Top 20, the melodies become more urgent, more unforgettable. MISIA’s “LOVE NEVER DIES” climbs to #10 with gospel-fueled beauty. The magnetic energy of “99 Steps” by STUTS feat. Kohjiya & Hana Hope keeps ascending—it’s funky, unpredictable, and deeply Japanese in its rhythmic confidence. Meanwhile, Vaundy continues his artistic journey with “僕にはどうしてわかるんだろう”, cementing his place as one of the country’s most contemplative voices.
Now, the stage is set for the elite. Hikaru Utada’s “Mine or Yours” slips slightly, but its emotional power remains undeniable—a lush blend of melancholy and maturity. Ed Sheeran’s “Old Phone” continues to resonate, perhaps because nostalgia has a universal ringtone. And then there’s “Priceless”, a bold and unexpected collaboration between Maroon 5 and Lisa, now seated comfortably at #3—sultry, polished, and pure radio gold.
At #2, King Gnu‘s “TWILIGHT!!!” continues its spellbinding run. Dramatic, orchestral, and utterly immersive, it’s a song that pulls you in like the last light of day clinging to the skyline.
But once again, there’s no shaking the #1. 星野源 (Gen Hoshino) holds the crown for a fifth consecutive week with “Star”—a piece that feels both celestial and grounded.
