The summer of ’94 was far from over — and MTV Europe kept the season sizzling with one of the most colorful, eclectic, and globally flavored charts of the year. From reggae to rock, Eurodance to soul ballads, this month’s countdown was a full sonic journey. Let’s climb from #20 to the brand-new #1! 🔥🎶
We begin with an emotional farewell: Take That debut at #20 with “Love Ain’t Here Anymore,” released at the end of June as the final single from their Everything Changes album. Despite peaking at #3 in the UK, it couldn’t outpace Wet Wet Wet‘s chart-topping power or All-4-One’s romantic storm. Right above, Gun enters with their gritty rock cover of “Word Up!”, taken from their 1994 album Swagger. Meanwhile, 2 Unlimited‘s “The Real Thing” starts to slide, but its dancefloor fire still lingers 🔥
There’s a flood of new entries this month that shake up the ranking. At #17, British reggae legends Aswad return with “Shine”, remixed by the Beatmasters — a high-energy anthem that reached #5 in the UK and got a nomination at the 1995 International Dance Awards 🌟. Prince Ital Joe & Marky Mark hold at #16 with “United,” while The Grid enters at #15 with “Swamp Thing”, their banjo-fueled techno stomper that peaked at #3 in the UK, Australia, and Denmark 🎛️🪕. Warren G & Nate Dogg’s “Regulate” slides in at #14, a laid-back West Coast classic that climbed to #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and became an MTV favorite 📺🌴
We move deeper into the chart with more debuts: The Rolling Stones strike at #13 with “Love Is Strong”, the dark, bluesy lead single from their Voodoo Lounge album. Inner Circle groove in at #12 with “Games People Play” — a reggae reinterpretation of Joe South’s 1968 classic that became a hit across Europe, peaking at #2 in Finland. And at #11, Jam & Spoon feat. Plavka return with the haunting and ethereal “Find Me (Odyssey to Anyoona)”, the follow-up to their iconic hit “Right in the Night”. It would go on to top charts in Finland and break into the top 10 across Europe 🌌
Inside the Top 10, veteran voices and festival anthems light the way. Joe Cocker’s raspy take on “Summer In The City” continues to climb, and Stiltskin’s “Inside” holds on with its grunge-meets-advertising charm (hello, Levi’s commercial). Reel 2 Real bounce up with “Go On Move”, while Crash Test Dummies begin to fade after a strong run. The Prodigy, on the other hand, gain traction with “No Good”, a track that would solidify their place as pioneers of rave culture 👟🔊
In the Top 5, things get delightfully unexpected. The B.C. 52’s — yes, the fictional band from The Flintstones movie — make a shock jump to #5 with their cartoonish rock’n’roll twist. Big Mountain remain a summer staple with “Baby I Love Your Way”, and Youssou N’Dour & Neneh Cherry’s bilingual anthem “7 Seconds” hits a new peak at #3 — an unforgettable fusion of world music, pop, and activism 🌍🕊️
And now… a new #1 rises 🌟
After just one month on the chart, All-4-One take the crown with “I Swear” — a tender R&B ballad that had already conquered the US, and now wins over Europe. With its rich harmonies and emotional delivery, it unseated Wet Wet Wet’s juggernaut “Love Is All Around”, which finally steps down to #2 after a powerful reign. A changing of the guard — but one full of love, harmony, and memory 💍💔
